Holiday
Home, Ben van Berkel and Caroline Bos (UN Studio, Amsterdam) with
Imaginary Forces (New York) at the Institute of Contemporary Art,
Philadelphia
This winter,
the Institute of Contemporary Art is pleased to present a site-specific
commissioned installation by renowned architects Ben van Berkel
and Caroline Bos in ICA’s second-floor galleries. The “Holiday
Home” is an experiential installation exploring and quantifying
areas in which the holiday home departs from modern design conventions.
The orthogonal surfaces of the archetypal house are extruded and
skewed creating the sculptural armature within which the dichotomies
of home and holiday home are played out. The new architectural
shape emulates escapism, the expectation of a holiday as removed
from the everyday experiential routine. The interplay of what
is real and what is virtual transpires on a number of levels touching
on ideas of collective memory and phenomenological perceptions.

Boom:
New Architecture in Philadelphia, exhibition at University of
Pennsylvania, with work by Winka Dubbeldam / Archi-tectonics
During the
past five years, Philadelphia has experienced a building boom
encompassing both private development and public institutions.
The city’s first new commercial building in many years,
Cesar Pelli’s Cira Centre, has radically altered the skyline
while inaugurating the precinct around 30th Street Station, west
of the Schuylkill River, as a site for further intensification.
At a much smaller scale, the Onion Flats Northern Liberties project
“Rag Flats” is a manifesto for a design-build form
of practice where the architect is also contractor and sometimes
developer. >>more |

Wouter
Dam solo exhibition at Garth Clark Gallery New York
Wouter Dam
continues a process of reduction. With each body of work, for
twenty years now, this Amsterdam artist has removed something
from what began as a complete, formal vessel, but has now entered
the realm of sculpture. At first his pots tilted slightly, then
tilted more until they lay supine on the ground, then they lost
their bottoms and became tubes, now they have lost the tube structure
and each work is just a fragment - two to three contours floating
free in space. >>more |

Do you like
life in the fast lane? Or perhaps you agree with Lao Tsu that
it’s the space inside a pot that makes it useful. Whether
your tastes run to Romanticism, Pop Art or Minimalism, they are
always reflected in your home. Its interior is an expression of
your unique individuality. And expressing that individuality beautifully,
tastefully, has become the specialty of the revolutionary Dutch

Newer
Orleans - A Shared Space: Six Dutch and American architectural
firms reveal their vision for symbolic and shared spaces for the
Crescent City
As the future
of New Orleans is debated, a vision of what a restored New Orleans
could look like will be on exhibit at the National Building Museum
April 29th through July 30th. Newer Orleans—A Shared Space
brings together six Dutch and American architectural firms to
reveal their vision for symbolic and shared spaces for the Crescent
City. Their works present a blueprint design of a New Orleans
with a clearly defined city center and new green spaces that connect
to the river. Each architectural firm was asked to create structures
or landscapes to illustrate how architecture could facilitate
community, create an urban icon and provide a way for New Orleans
to connect back to the land. The firms, MVRDV, UN Studio and West
8 from the Netherlands, and Huff + Gooden Architects, Morphosis,
and Hargreaves Associates from the USA designed structures and
landscapes at the neighborhood, city and regional level. Through
their school, city hall and landscape designs, the architects
created communal spaces that unite the city. >>more |

Skin
+ Bones: Parallel Practices in Fashion and Architecture at Los
Angeles MOCA, with work by a/o. Winka Dubbeldam / Archi-Tectonics,
Rem Koolhaas / OMA, Neutelings Riedijk Architecten, and Viktor
& Rolf
This exhibition
explores the common visual and intellectual principles that underlie
both fashion and architecture. Both disciplines start with the
human body and expand on ideas of space and movement, serving
as outward expressions of personal, political, and cultural identity.
Architects and fashion designers produce environments defined
through spatial awareness—the structures they create are
based on volume, function, proportion, and material. Presenting
the work of international fashion designers and architects, the
exhibition examines themes such as shelter, identity, tectonic
strategies, creative process, and parallel stylistic tendencies
including deconstruction and minimalism. The exhibition is curated
by MOCA Curator of Architecture & Design Brooke Hodge and
is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue.

Live!
From Our Studios. Moss at Design Miami/2006 with work by among
others Studio Job, Maarten Baas, Tord Boontje, Hella Jongerius
and Claudy Jongstra
For Design
Miami/ 2006, Moss Gallery New York presents an installation of
specially commissioned, monumental pieces from several key contemporary
designers, drawing directly from one-off or limited-edition studio
work. Continuing to violate the classical boundaries drawn between
'art' and 'design', these Studios continue, presumptuously, to
expand the definition of both, forging a new 'functional expressiveness'
emblematic of a cross-boarder unification of both disciplines.
Moving comfortably between the industrial process and an artesian,
studio approach, these designer-artists, to varying degrees, draw
simultaneously from both, creating a hybrid 'industrial craft'
which benefits from both set-skills and traditions. >>more |
