Ed Annink,
principal of Dutch design studio Ontwerpwerk, multidisciplinary
design, will present a selection of his product designs for
well known companies such as Driade and Authentics at Felissimo
Design House in New York. On exhibit will also be new products
for a young company from New Zealand, Purple South, as well
as new products for the Dutch innovative ceramic company Cor
Unum. In addition, Annink will present new product concepts
as prototypes: an 11 meter long woven table cloth, a set of
7 'non slippery' serving trays, 'birdie' wall decorations and
a wallpaper design based on the work of William Morris.
The spatial
vacuum between culture and economy is an inspiring theme to
Annink. He likes to look at this almost untouched area. Is it
possible to bridge between these two phenomenons, can a designer
tap dance with one leg in culture and the other leg in economy?
The stories behind the design, forgotten sources, history and
contextual awareness are elements, which Annink uses to give
a face to his designs. He likes to be very radical in reduction
as well, bringing ideas back to the best minimum possible. Produce
able, with as little assembly as possible, easy to transport,
easy to distribute. With his book "Bright Minds Beautiful
Ideas" Annink pleas for more curiosity and for unlimited
cultural interest. Can we do with less (material) and with more
(awareness)?
Ed Annink
is in New York from May 6 until May 18, 2005.
