Empire
State Building lit in an Orange scheme to celebrate Dutch Queen's
Day
On the occasion
of Dutch Queen's Day 2005 and the Silver Jubilee of Her Majesty
Queen Beatrix, the Empire State Building will be lit in an Orange
scheme from April 29 - May 1, 2005.
The Empire
State Building continuously changes color schemes, and a schedule
and explanation of the reasons behind the schemes can be found
on the building's web
site. For example, during Christmas the scheme is red and
green, during Valentine's Day the scheme is red, and during
the American national celebrations the schemes are red, white
and blue.
Orange is
also an important color for New Yorkers. New York City's flag
carries the colors orange, white and blue, with the color orange
representing the historic ties between New York (New Amsterdam)
and The Netherlands.
For the
second year in a row, the Empire State Building has decided
to literally interpret the Dutch saying "Oranje Boven"
(Orange Above All"), and light the Manhattan skyscraper
in orange. The very top will remain white, as that level only
has a limited amount of colored lamps.
The request
for this color scheme came from Sander Raaymakers, organizer
of NLBorrels,
a not-for-profit netwerk for Dutch expats, with support by the
Consulate General of The Netherlands in New York.
