Golden
Clogs, Dutch Mountains, touring exhibition of work by a young
generation of cutting-edge Dutch jewelry artists at Loupe Gallery,
Montclair, NJ
Golden Clogs, Dutch Mountains – the
title of this exhibition is full of contradictions, and perhaps
the work on show will contradict prevailing ideas about Dutch
jewellery as well. There is not a typical Dutch style in jewelry
today, as there was in the Sixties and Seventies of the last century
– the period when studio jewelry was re-invented in Holland.
I deliberately make use of this word ‘re-invented’
because studio jewelry existed already since the post-war years
when jewellers like Archibald Dumbar and Chris Steenbergen decided
to start working in their own studio as independent artist-jewellers,
making work for clients as well as for themselves with the aim
to show these in art and craft galleries and exhibitions. >>more

Simply
Droog: 10+ 3 Years of Creating Innovation and Discussion, sole
North American exhibition at Museum of Arts & Design in New
York
For over a
decade, the Droog Design collective has set forth innovative and
inspired designs for everyday objects using low-cost, industrial,
or recycled materials. Comprising more than 160 iconic designs,
simply droog, 10 + 3 years of creating innovation and discussion
reveals the playfulness, significance, humor, and social meaning
imbued in the work of this international design platform. The
exhibition, which has toured throughout Europe and South America
since its Munich premiere in 2004, will make its sole North American
presentation at the Museum of Arts & Design from September
21, 2006, through January 14, 2007. This presentation will feature
products and prototypes created by Droog from its founding in
1993 through 2005, with a significant number of new designs seen
in the United States for the first time. “Our
Museum explores the materials and creative processes of contemporary
artists, and Droog celebrates this intersection from a unique
design perspective,” said Holly Hotchner, director, Museum
of Arts & Design. “Droog considers process as both a
physical and conceptual action, and embraces those materials that
we as a society often overlook or discard. simply droog is a testament
to how the everyday can be rearranged into a finished, enlightened
form.” .

OMA
in Beijing: China Central Television Headquarters by Ole Scheeren
and Rem Koolhaas in MoMA's Architecture and Design Galleries
This exhibition
presents one of the most innovative architecture projects under
construction today. Scheduled to open for the Beijing Olympics
in 2008, the complex, which comprises three buildings and a media
park situated on a site east of Beijing's Forbidden City, embodies
a proposal for social and urban change through a rethinking of
the tall building. CCTV is a private building that will have a
uniquely public Visitor's Loop, while its mirror image—TVCC,
or the Television Cultural Center—is a public structure
housing a state-of-the-art broadcasting theater, cultural facilities,
and a five-star hotel. >>more |

Skin
+ Bones: Parallel Practices in Fashion and Architecture at Los
Angeles MOCA, with work by a/o. Winka Dubbeldam / Archi-Tectonics,
Rem Koolhaas / OMA, Neutelings Riedijk Architecten, and Viktor
& Rolf
This exhibition
explores the common visual and intellectual principles that underlie
both fashion and architecture. Both disciplines start with the
human body and expand on ideas of space and movement, serving
as outward expressions of personal, political, and cultural identity.
Architects and fashion designers produce environments defined
through spatial awareness—the structures they create are
based on volume, function, proportion, and material. Presenting
the work of international fashion designers and architects, the
exhibition examines themes such as shelter, identity, tectonic
strategies, creative process, and parallel stylistic tendencies
including deconstruction and minimalism. The exhibition is curated
by MOCA Curator of Architecture & Design Brooke Hodge and
is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue.

UN
Studio: Evolution of Space, exhibition at Yale University, Gallery
of the Art & Architecture Building
This exhibition
showcases the revolutionary approach to construction and design
developed by the innovative Amsterdam-based firm UN Studio. Originating
in the Deutsches Architektur Museum (German Architecture Museum),
this exhibition focuses on five projects that exemplify the firm’s
prototype “design models,” or planning strategies,
derived from digital technology. For example, their submission
to a competition for a redevelopment on Manhattan’s West
Side represents their holistic “Deep Planning” approach;
the double-helix shape of their heralded new Mercedes-Benz Museum
in Stuttgart primarily typifies the “Mathematical Model.”
The exhibition installation, which brings to life the firm’s
principles, is helpful, if not essential, to understand the revolutionary
“gestalt” of UN Studio and to experience first-hand
the new reality their application of digital technology has effected.
Ben van Berkel, director and co-founder with Caroline Bos of UN
Studio, will deliver a public lecture at the School of Architecture
on April 12. >>more |

of the Association of Dutch Designers (BNO) put out by BIS Publishers.
