Last year,
Mayor Bloomberg officially declared the period coinciding with
ICFF as New York Design Week. The Meatpacking District welcomes
the design industry and enthusiasts alike to enjoy the evolution
of the landmarked district and peruse more than one hundred
of the city’s top retailers, restaurants and architectural
treasures. Design Week ’06 is sponsored by Surface Magazine
and Sharp Electronics Corporation, produced by Abe Gurko, in
conjunction with the Meatpacking District Initiative. “The
establishment of Design Week helps position the U.S. as a vibrant
design destination,” says Abe, seasoned event producer
and co-founder of Downtown—New York’s premiere off-site
design event. “What makes the Meatpacking District the
perfect place to host off-site design events is the rich, layered
aesthetic of the neighborhood. The most exciting architecture
and design projects are currently underway here, it’s
amazing to watch the neighborhood unfold,” he adds. Abe
was an area resident long before the Meatpacking District began
its renaissance.
“Our twenty-four hour neighborhood is landmarked and our
core industry here is design, so this is the perfect place for
aficionados to enjoy exhibitions. Appreciate the design of our
retail stores and naturally eat, drink and be merry,”
says Annie Washburn, Executive Director of the Meatpacking District
Initiative. “The MPD is a design community so we want
to establish our neighborhood as one of the key places to visit
during the ICFF, while giving New Yorkers another great reason
to spend some time down here as well.

About
The Meatpacking District Initiative
The Meatpacking District Initiative (MPDI) was founded in 2003
by a group of local business leaders to produce a map of the
neighborhood and lead a public relations effort about the growing
prominence of the area. Today the MPDI has 100 street-level
business members located in the blocks between 12th and 16th
Streets in Manhattan and West of 8th Avenue. Located in and
among the historically significant meatpacking houses of Manhattan,
businesses have come to the MPD to create a hotbed of style,
design, fashion, nightlife and culinary innovation. www.meatpacking-district.com
