Design
Entrepeneurs: Connecting Cultures, the Metropolis Conference
at ICFF
Metropolis magazine extends its annual
ICFF tradition of delving into a single topic from a variety
of perspectives with "Design Entrepreneurs: Connecting
Cultures", this year's full-day conference.
Susan
S. Szenasy, the magazine's eminent editor, and a roster of industry
notables will tackle some of the more fascinating conundrums
that designers and manufacturers face today. Where the inquiry
will end, no one yet knows, but the questions along the way
intrigue and, in some cases, bedevil all who work in the field.
Among them: Which design approaches and ideas translate from
one culture to another? What kinds of cultural clashes emerge
when designing for a global market? How do local identities
enrich global markets? As it has in previous years, it brings
together some of the best talents in the field to parse the
answers.
This
year's faculty includes an international group of emerging designers,
marketers, manufacturers, and scholars, who plan to explore
how the shifting patterns of cross-culturalization continue
to re-invent the way designers work. Participants include Canadian
designers Stephanie Forsythe of molo and Jason Shatilla of Surface
3; global design chief of IKEA, Lars Engman; head of industrial
design at the Royal College of Art in London, Tom Baker; and
Robert Kloos, the director of visual
arts, architecture, and design at the Consulate General of the
Netherlands. Fritz Hansen, the Danish furniture manufacturer
will present the history of Arne Jacobsen's Series 7 chair,
introduced 50 years ago; and design historian John Berry will
present excerpts from his latest book, which analyzes the factors
that influence companies to become design catalysts, and the
good (and goods) that result.
