& Orange Alert Dutch Design were on a brief hiatus for a
while, but in the interim many new exciting developments took
place, and we hope that with this newsletter we can inform you
about recent and upcoming Dutch design projects in New York.
Recent
events...
For
those of you who have not seen the wonderful exhibition "Groundswell:
Constructing the Contemporary Landscape" at the Museum
of Modern Art, you still have a chance until May 16. The exhibition
presents 23 landscape-design projects that reclaim and transform
urban spaces —many derelict and in need of rehabilitation—
into public parks and gardens. It includes work by Adriaan Geuze,
the principal and founder of the Rotterdam-based firm West8.

On
March 4 the exciting new exhibition "Hella Jongerius Selects
from the Permanent Collection" opened at Cooper-Hewitt
Museum National Design Museum. Jongerius guest curates an exhibition
of samplers from the museum’s collection of over 1,000
samplers from Great Britain, Europe and the Americas.

Five
years ago VIVID in Rotterdam launched Designvormgeving.nl ("vormgeving"
is the Dutch word for Design), a quintessential guide to the
design world in The Netherlands. Today almost half of the visitors
are international, so after 5 years they are presenting a new,
global name: designws.com.

Milan Furniture Fair.

In
April Abbeville Press is releasing IDY 20, the most recent volume
in the International Design Yearbook series. As in the previous
IDY annuals, a guest editor has chosen the designs showcased
in this volume. This year's selections were made by internationally
acclaimed designer Marcel Wanders, whose unusual approach to
design ensured an unusual volume in the series.

Design
Within Reach features Gerard van den Berg, seating expert and
founder of two of the Netherlands' most well-known furniture
manufacturers--Montis and LABEL--on the latest cover of their
catalog. In addition, DWR will introduce Van den Berg to an
American audience via a whirlwind tour that covers San Francisco,
Chicago and New York from April 26 - 29.

For
the second year in a row, the Empire State Building's lighting
scheme will be orange from April 29 - May 1, to celebrate Dutch
Queen's Day (April 30).

From
April 30 until July 4, The Corcoran Gallery of Art and the Royal
Netherlands Embassy in Washington DC present Dutch Royal Silver:
Celebrating the Silver Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Beatrix.
This special exhibition, held in the Corcoran’s Salon
Doré, features a selection of rarely seen decorative
works from the private collection of the Royal House of Orange-Nassau,
many of which have never before been displayed in the United
States.

With
everybody returning from the Milan Furniture Fair, it is time
to look ahead to Design Week in New York in May. There will
be many Dutch design events and presentations, including an
exhibition by Ed Annink at Felissimo Design House; Artifort,
Leolux and Frame Magazine at ICFF; a Design Academy Eindhoven
& Royal Tichelaar Makkum presentation at the Stephan Weiss
Gallery; and a special Marcel Wanders / Moooi presentation at
the Design Within Reach showroom in Soho. The 3rd annual Downtown
alternative design fair is also getting in gear, with a brand
new location at Drive-In Studios in Chelsea, possibly the location
for an Orange Alert Dutch Design "Part II" event.
