Orange
Alert: Dutch Design 2005: An unprecedented roster of high-profile
events
and exhibitions in New York City and beyond
Dear
Reader:
We
hope that you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and look forward to
the Christmas season, which in New York will be officially called
in on November 30, 9pm with the traditional lighting of the Christmas
tree at Rockefeller Center. It promises to be yet another spectacular
show!
We
also hope that you had a chance to visit all the wonderful exhibitions
and events that took place in the last few months. In case you
missed some of it, you can visit a brand new Image
Gallery on dutchdesignevents.com, which features, among others,
fashion shows by Angelos Bratis, Mada van Gaans, G+N, Percy Irausquin,
Melanie Rozema, Jan Taminiau and Daryl van Wouw. Other noteworthy
galleries showcase projects by Claudy Jongstra at Moss, Amie Dicke
at Visionaire Gallery, and several exhibitions by the Dutch Fashion
Foundation.
The
next two weeks are also your last chance to visit Dutch at the
Edge of Design: Fashion and Textiles from The Netherlands, the
much heralded exhibition at the Museum at FIT, which closes on
December 9, 2005. In case you do not live in New York you can
visit an image gallery here
to see the installed work by more than 30 Dutch fashion and product
designers.
Another
highlight was the opening of the much anticipated exhibition Safe:
Design Takes On Risk by MoMA curator Paola Antonelli. Press
attention for this in-depth show has been phenomenal, and it is
a must visit (until January 2, 2006). Look out for work by Dutch
designers such as Cindy van den Bremen, Mojo Barriers, Right To
Die NL, Twan Verdonck / Neo Human Toys, Vlieger & Van Dam,
Dre Wapenaar, and the archives of Paul Mijksenaar.
Other
noteworthy projects included work by the multi-talented artist
and illustrator Lucky "Dubz" Trifonas, a special project
by Kaptein Roodnat for Martinez Gallery, a RISD Athena Design
Excellence Award for Hella Jongerius, the introduction of the
New Shopping Bag by Susan Bijl, and the launch of the Dutch Design
Yearbook 2004/2005 by Aad Krol and Timo de Rijk. Information about
all these projects can be found at our events
and archives pages.
It
has been a wonderful and exciting year, and it will only get better!
As of December 1, 2005 the Orange Alert web site will become a
national web site that not only features projects and events in
New York, but all across the United States. To kick things off,
we are featuring amazing upcoming projects in Miami during Art
Basel Miami Beach (Dec. 1-4), including the fair design by artist
and architect Tom Postma,
a special group exhibition 05
Degrees of Separation with among others Maarten Baas, Tord
Boontje and Claudy Jongstra at a special presentation by Moss
at the new Design
05 event, Leolux
at HausScape in the Miami Design District, as well as a special
installation by Atelier
van Lieshout at Art Positions on Miami Beach. More projects
for 2006 will be announced soon.
We
hope that you will enjoy visiting or reading about these projects!
