Orange Alert: Dutch Design 2005-2006: An unprecedented roster of high-profile events
and exhibitions in New York City and beyond

Dear Reader:

Back in full swing after a brief hiatus, the Orange Alert Dutch Design website has been updated to provide you with a comprehensive overview of Dutch design and architecture projects and events that are taking place throughout the United States in 2006.

The beginning of the year brought some highly successful and acclaimed exhibitions, including The Holiday Home by UN Studio at ICA Philadelphia; Boom / New Architecture in Philadelphia with work by Winka Dubbeldam (Archi-tectonics); Of Thrones and Lesser Elevations at Moss in New York, with work by among others Jurgen Bey and Maarten Baas; Netherlands in Los Angeles at ACME Gallery, a group exhibition with work by various Dutch designers; ColourForma in Philadelphia, a site-specific exhibition by Minima with work by Ben van Berkel for Knoll, and products by moooi; and The National Building in Washingon DC saw the much anticipated arrival of the Netherlands Architecture Institute's "Newer Orleans - A Shares Space" exhibition, an exhibition that reveals visions for symbolic and shared spaces for the Crescent City by six firms, including designs by MVRDV, UN Studio and West 8.

The Visual Arts Department at Northeastern University in Boston invited graphic designer Harmen Liemburg for a four-month residency, and Art Center College of Design will host designers from the firm 75B for a full year starting this May. Art Center also organized the very successful 2nd Biennial Conference "Radical Craft, Stories from The Source," which included keynote presentations by Claudy Jongstra and artist Theo Jansen. There were lectures by Rem Koolhaas (for an overflow crowd of 1,500 at the National Building Museum) and Petra Blaisse at the Wexner Center in Columbus. And lastly, Jan Abrams at the Design Institute at University of Minneapolis published the must-read "Else/Where Mapping" with many contributions by Dutch authors and designers, and Taschen this month launches the beautiful "Architecture in The Netherlands," which features work by fourteen prominent Dutch architecture firms.

This week international design comes to New York in all its facets. An impressive array of events will take place during New York Design Week 2006, with many Dutch design firms presenting at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair; the new and much anticipated Meatpacking District Design Week, including participation by Winka Dubbeldam and Dutchtub; many events and projects in Brooklyn, including a group show with Dutch designers from Eindhoven; and the eagerly awaited solo exhibition with monumental assemblages by Hella Jongerius at Moss. And finally, you can attend a Trend Union presentation by Li Edelkoort at Parsons School of Design. This wide array of events and presentations shows that Dutch design is not only known for its cultural and conceptual values, but also for its commercial success, with product lines for such well known international companies as Artecnica, Knoll, Maharam, Moroso, Vitra and the like.

Below you can find a brief overview of all the Dutch presentations. For more elaborate information please click on the links or visit our events page. For comprehensive lists of the massive amount of projects that take place all over New York, do visit the following sources: Core77, Icon, Interni, Meatpacking District Design Week, and Metropolis Online. We hope that you will enjoy visiting or reading about these projects! For additional and up to date information, please visit www.dutchdesignevents.com.
