Stories From The Source: Radical Craft, the Second Biennial Art Center Design Conference in Pasadena, with Theo Jansen and Claudy Jongstra.

Art Center College of Design will convene the premiere international event that will bring together innovators in technology, architecture, business, media, and science for a provocative look at the meaning of craft in our world today. Launched to critical acclaim in 2004, the prestigious Art Center Design Conference is a biennial event that serves as a catalyst for rethinking the pivotal role of design in society today and into the future. Once again, the South Campus Wind Tunnel’s magnificent raw exhibition and performance space, now LEED-certified, will be the venue for the Conference’s main stage presentations.

Stories from the Source: Radical Craft will examine the most advanced examples of craft in architecture, the arts, science, technology, storytelling, fashion, food, magic and more.
Over three exhilarating days, Radical Craft will explore the extremes of craft, including:
* satellites and space exploration
* invented worlds in stagecraft and animation
* digital-game wizardry
* haute couture vs. “UnFashion”
* craft in the service of humanitarian need
* the art of the 30-second story
* new paradigms of industrial production
* sleight-of-hand craft
* extreme custom car design
* crafting the news

Over 30 design luminaries, emerging leaders, and internationally known speakers will assemble to present their stories over the four-day gathering. Speakers include: Constance Adams, chief architect, Synthesis International; Tord Boontje, high-tech innovator; Dave Eggers, author and editor, McSweeny’s; Dr. David Gallo, deep-sea explorer; Jeff Goodby, co-chairman, Goodby, Silverstein & Partners; Jim Hackett, CEO, Steelcase; Jonathan Ive, design senior vice president, Apple Computer;Theo Jansen, artist/engineer; Ricky Jay, sleight-of-hand master; Harold Koda, Costume Institute curator, Metropolitan Museum of Art; Claudy Jongstra, felt engineer; Claudia Kotchka, vice president, design innovation and strategy, The Procter & Gamble Company; Bob Mankoff, cartoon editor, The New Yorker; Erin McKean, editor, New Oxford American Dictionary; Tift Merritt, singer songwriter; Isaac Mizrahi, fashion designer; and Jimmy Wales, founder, Wikipedia. The Conference Moderator is renowned news correspondent and author John Hockenberry.
